Water Less This Winter
Don’t worry about under-watering your plants this winter. January and February are the wettest months in Southern California, and the cooler weather this time of year typically makes most plants go dormant, reducing their water needs by up to 70 percent. This means you can drastically reduce — or even eliminate — your outdoor watering, which will save you time and money, and save your plants from overwatering.
Before watering your lawn or plants this winter, dig a hole two to three inches deep and check for moisture. Don’t water if the soil is damp. Continue to check every few days until you find dry soil. Don’t forget to turn your sprinklers off when it rains, and use the soil moisture technique to determine when to turn them back on.
With the New Year upon us, now is also a great time to reduce your indoor water use. Visit www.MNWD.com to find great tips to reduce your water use throughout the year.
