California-Friendly Plant: Aloe

AloeNative to Africa, aloe plants have been praised for their medicinal properties since biblical times. But now, their striking appearance and low water use give this plant a whole new appeal.

Aloes are great for adding a splash of seasonal color to your garden. They can be grown either in pots or in the ground and are composed of thick, fleshy green leaves with a gel-like sap inside. Dependant on variety, aloe plants can feature attractive pink, yellow or red flowers, which are tubular in shape and sit on top of a leafless stem.

In addition to being attractive, aloe can also help our bodies heal. It is commonly used to treat skin ailments, burns or wounds, and has been proven to help in reducing the chance of infection. Aloes also sip water, making them a great California-Friendly plant. And during the winter they become dormant, requiring almost no water at all. What a great combination for a water-wise garden!
