Having the Right Supplies at the Right Time Saves Customers Money

It takes a comprehensive team effort for MNWD to repair and replace our infrastructure in a timely manner, and that collaboration becomes even more important when emergencies occur. Our customers see the District’s field crews in their white trucks on a regular basis, but they are supported by a Purchasing Agent and Warehouse Clerk who work together to make sure the field crews have the supplies and equipment they need, so MNWD can deliver on our promise of a safe and reliable water supply.

The District’s Purchasing Agent is responsible for obtaining competitive bids and negotiating pricing on many of the items MNWD needs to operate, including pipes, pumps and vehicles. The Purchasing Agent also works on maintaining competitive relationships with key suppliers to ensure the most cost-effective services and products for the District. The Purchasing Agent takes advantage of state contract pricing and cooperative partnerships with other public agencies, which provides the District unique pricing advantages and opportunities for cost savings.

Once the items are purchased, the District’s Warehouse Clerk receives delivery and maintains MNWD’s inventory. The District needs a wide range of supplies on hand so we can quickly respond to issues throughout our service area, and a strategically stocked warehouse is critical to meeting those needs. The District manages what’s called an "ontime inventory system," working with other departments to identify future needs and keeping only what’s immediately needed in stock. This reduces the amount of excess inventory and helps to keep costs down.

Together, the Purchasing Agent and Warehouse Clerk provide the expertise that allows MNWD to efficiently maintain our system, and are a key part of the District’s team that works hard every day to meet our customers’ water needs.
